Juniper Research: 5G satellite networks will bring $17 billion in additional revenue to operators over the next seven years

by ZOUJUECHENG 26 Dec 2023

Juniper Research's latest study reveals that telecom operators are expected to generate an additional $17 billion in revenue from 2024 to 2030 through 5G satellite networks compliant with 3GPP standards.

The research emphasizes the need for operators to establish partnerships with Satellite Network Operators (SNO) to enable the rollout of profitable satellite-based 5G services to users. SNOs possess the capability to launch next-generation satellite hardware into space and are responsible for the operation and management of the resulting network.

The study predicts the first commercial launch of 5G satellite networks in 2024, with over 110 million 3GPP-compliant 5G satellite connections expected to be operational by 2030. To capitalize on this growth opportunity, Juniper Research recommends that operators prioritize establishing partnerships with satellite network operators capable of launching geostationary satellites. These satellites, following the Earth's rotation, remain positioned over the countries and regions where the operator provides services, offering continuous network connectivity.

Furthermore, operators must leverage their existing billing relationships with mobile users and businesses as a platform to increase revenue from 5G satellite connections over the next seven years. The report anticipates that these existing billing relationships will enable operators to rapidly drive the adoption of satellite connections by integrating satellite services into their existing terrestrial networks.

The study also predicts that as the development of 6G accelerates, operators will increasingly rely on satellite network operators to provide services. Sam Barker, the author of the research report, commented, "Operators need to consider not only 5G satellite services but also the forward-looking planning for 6G networks, including coverage and throughput capacity, when selecting satellite network operator partners."
