Embracing 5.5G, indoor wireless networks are fully digitized

by ZOUJUECHENG 25 Dec 2023

On October 10th, during the first day of the 14th Global Mobile Broadband Forum, the Indoor Digitalization Roundtable with the theme "Accelerating Indoor Digitalization, Moving towards 5.5G" was held in Dubai. Bo Xiangying, President of Huawei's Wireless Indoor Digitalization Product Line, delivered a keynote speech titled "Leading 5G, Embracing 5.5G."

In the era of 5.5G, indoor network construction faces greater challenges. Bo Xiangying highlighted the significance of indoor spaces as essential scenes for wireless network coverage. In the 4G era, they supported over 80% of mobile network services, and in 5G-developed regions, around 80% of 5G data traffic occurs indoors. Due to various factors, indoor wireless network construction lags behind outdoor development, presenting significant challenges in the 5.5G era with higher spectrum resources, more frequency bands, diverse network configurations, and air interface complexities.

Bo Xiangying pointed out that in 2023, Indoor Digitalization Distributed System (DIS) will surpass traditional Indoor Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and become the trend in indoor network construction. With the C-band being the preferred frequency band for 5G network construction, the main direction for 5.5G network construction involves overlaying Sub6G and millimeter-wave bands. Traditional DAS struggles to support spectrum above 2.7GHz, making it challenging to accommodate the long-term evolution of 5G/5.5G. The widespread use of high-frequency spectrum resources and the diverse development of indoor services make indoor digitalization the inevitable choice for indoor network construction.

To lead 5G and embrace 5.5G, Huawei's LampSite solution is well-prepared. In the 4G/5G era, Huawei's LampSite solution realized "ubiquitous gigabit" network capabilities, facilitating the commercial success of operators in valuable scenarios such as airports, subways, shopping malls, and stadiums, achieving a leading network experience. Facing the new trends and requirements of 5.5G indoor network construction, the indoor digitalization solution encounters various challenges: more frequency bands, achieving simpler deployment; higher traffic, attaining lower energy consumption; and more scenarios, providing more capabilities. Bo Xiangying introduced how Huawei's LampSite solution innovates in three directions to help operators maintain leadership in the 5.5G era.

  1. Ultimate Performance, Superb Experience: In experience scenarios, Huawei's LampSite achieves 10Gbps ultimate performance through an ultra-broadband high-integration solution, upgrading the experience from gigabit to ten gigabits.

  2. Ultimate Green, Ultra-High Efficiency: Huawei's LampSite achieves ultra-low power consumption by employing an all-stack low-power design, enabling a single pRRU to support more frequency bands with lower energy consumption. Coupled with intelligent deep energy-saving features, it achieves deep shutdowns and quick awakenings, improving operational efficiency and realizing "0 bits, 0 watts."

  3. Ultimate Fusion, Super Comprehensive Capability: Huawei's LampSite can meet the various high, medium, and low-speed IoT requirements and provides multidimensional capabilities such as large uplink, sub-meter positioning, and millisecond-level latency. It expands the scope of network value-added services, promoting increased revenue.

An "excellent experience, high energy efficiency, and multi-service" indoor network is the cornerstone for supporting future business development and constructing the foundation of the digital economy. While 5.5G brings new opportunities to the industry, it also poses new challenges. Bo Xiangying calls for collective action, stating that the new journey of 5.5G indoor industry has begun, and global operators and industry partners should work hand in hand, pushing industry progress toward the same standards and the same direction, jointly realizing business value.

It is reported that at the 2023 Global Mobile Broadband Forum, Huawei collaborates with industry partners GSMA, GTI, and SAMENA, engaging in in-depth interactions and exchanges with global mobile network operators, vertical industry leaders, and ecosystem partners. Together, they aim to create an industry-prosperous ecosystem, devise successful paths for 5G commercialization, and accelerate the adoption of 5.5G.
