50G PON is becoming a critical need for users in all walks of life to achieve digital transformation

by ZOUJUECHENG 29 Jan 2024

The current momentum in the global fiber optic access technology sector is strong, with widespread applications in households, campuses, urban areas, and manufacturing industries. Passive Optical Network (PON) technology stands out as the preferred leading technology in fiber optic access, offering low latency, sustainability, and meeting the ever-growing bandwidth demands. PON solutions aim to support bandwidth upgrades while safeguarding existing investments, allowing coexistence with earlier technologies. Presently, 10G PON is extensively deployed, with the primary future upgrade direction being 50G PON. 50G PON integrates all the advantages of PON, providing a future-oriented fiber optic access technology for communication service providers (CSPs), as well as IT managers in smart cities, campuses, and enterprises.

PON technology is the preferred choice for Fiber to the Home (FTTH) access. With the continued growth in bandwidth consumption, CSPs are striving to provide higher-speed PON solutions for households, as well as Fiber to the Room (FTTR) solutions. While the global deployment of 10G PON upgrades is currently thriving, the evolution towards 50G PON in the future is inevitable. 50G PON will meet various bandwidth requirements in the future, including:

  1. Continuous growth in household broadband demand. By 2028, it is projected that 44% of global broadband subscription rates will reach 1 Gbps or higher, compared to just 6% in 2021. Additionally, the average broadband speed is expected to increase significantly.

  2. Rapid development of smart home services, requiring reliable, low-latency broadband support, such as professional monitoring, video cloud storage, and smart elderly care.

  3. The increasing number and functionality of connected home devices. High-quality Extended Reality (XR) experiences require 1 Gbps bandwidth and latency below 3ms to ensure a superior user experience.

  4. Many residential users engage in home-based work, and numerous small and micro-enterprises support home operations. Adequate bandwidth and low latency are crucial for cloud applications and high-quality video conferencing. Additionally, home networks must support multiple users and concurrent activities. 50G PON can meet the future connectivity needs of homes and ensure sufficient bandwidth for the entire household using FTTR.

Various types and scales of campuses and enterprises rely on low-latency broadband connections and cloud-based applications. Virtualization and Artificial Intelligence (AI) enhance employees' digital capabilities and video collaboration. 50G PON meets the demands of various campus and enterprise environments, such as:

  1. Educational campuses are evolving towards smart campuses with digital classrooms and laboratories. Educational practitioners are adopting Augmented Reality (AR)/Virtual Reality (VR) applications to simulate learning and real-life scenarios, accelerating the arrival of the metaverse. The metaverse supports collaborative work among on-campus students, remote students, or students across regions and schools. This new immersive educational technology requires high bandwidth and low latency, making 50G PON the ideal choice for smart educational campuses.

  2. Manufacturing campuses require advanced digital operations to increase production output, operational profits, and quality while reducing resource waste and energy consumption. This environment, known as Industry 4.0, necessitates a fully optical network to enable fast data movement and management between machines, factory floors, control rooms, edges, and the cloud. 50G PON enables this capability.

  3. Medical campuses have complex organizational structures, including specialized equipment, software, staff, and patients, spanning multiple facilities. The portability and exchangeability of digital data are essential for improving healthcare levels, with data security being equally critical. The use of advanced digital imaging technology has significantly improved healthcare levels. However, medical image sharing and cloud storage require high bandwidth, driving the demand for 50G PON.

  4. Smart cities require support from various technologies, including AI, Machine Learning, and Computer Vision, to achieve coordinated operations and real-time adjustments of city services, assets, and systems, providing a better, safer environment for work, life, and entertainment. Smart cities bring many benefits, including cleaner air, optimized traffic management, more efficient government services, and lower crime rates. High bandwidth, low latency, and reliable connections are essential for implementing smart city applications, which also rely on 50G PON support.

Sustainable development is a common goal for global CSPs and IT managers. PON is a sustainable, easily upgradable broadband technology based on fiber optics and point-to-multipoint connections, supporting multiple users and applications over a single fiber strand. Higher-rate PON technologies (such as 10G PON) are continuously reducing the power consumption per gigabit of bandwidth while increasing bandwidth. This means that higher bandwidth can be provided while reducing power consumption. With the continued growth in bandwidth demand and the number of access users, campuses, enterprises, and devices, this becomes crucial. 50G PON is a future-proof, sustainable fiber optic broadband technology.

Currently, 50G PON solutions are rapidly entering the market. CSPs and IT managers should actively examine 50G PON solutions and conduct laboratory pilots starting from 2024. They should carefully evaluate their respective use cases to adapt to a wide range of customer types and applications, covering various scenarios such as homes and smart cities.

PON's ability to support multi-user and multi-application access has been fully demonstrated, and it is also a sustainable, easily upgradable technology. Building upon PON technology, 50G PON will continue to evolve, realizing ubiquitous fiber connections.
