China Association for Science and Technology releases 15 major scientific and technological issues in the field of photonics in 2023

Recently, at the 2023 China (Changchun) Aerospace and Optoelectronic Industry Innovation Conference, the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) unveiled 15 major scientific and technological issues in the field of photonics for the year 2023.

5 Engineering and Technical Challenges: How to achieve ultra-strong laser for Electronic Warfare (EW); how to build large-scale space optical devices; how to realize high-functionality, high-density optical-electronic integrated chips for sensing and computing; how to achieve real-time, real-space imaging of microdynamics at atomic and electronic intrinsic scales; how to achieve high spatiotemporal resolution global gravity gradient measurement.

5 Frontier Scientific Issues: How to break through spatiotemporal limits to achieve ultrafast and super-resolution imaging; what degree of freedom people have to shape light; what is the volume limit of optical systems; what is the integration limit of optoelectronic chips; how to make optical computing complete.

5 Industrial Technology Issues: How to develop a mature silicon-based optoelectronic heterogeneous integration process platform to support the development needs of next-generation information technology; how to overcome the challenges in laser spatiotemporal property testing and measurement; how to achieve autonomous and controllable high-end sensors; how to develop the "China Solution" for intelligent connected vehicles; how to overcome the challenges of reducing loss and achieving large-scale industrial production of anti-resonant hollow-core optical fibers.

Several of these challenges are also hot topics being researched in the industry. For example, optoelectronic integrated chips are critical for the efficiency of data center optical interconnects and even for the application of AI large models. Similarly, the "China Solution" for intelligent connected vehicles is crucial for China's leadership in the automotive industry in the latter half of its development.

Anti-resonant hollow-core optical fibers are also a direction that the optical communication industry is striving to break through, representing a major revolution in fiber optic technology.
