Credo launches industry's first 800G optical DSP chip with monolithic integrated CMOS VCSEL driver
22 Feb 2024
Credo Technology (NASDAQ: CRDO) has unveiled two new products today: Dove 800D and Dove 410D PAM4 Optical DSP chips with integrated VCSEL drivers. These two chips are designed to accelerate the time to market for customer products and address the growing bandwidth demands in hyperscale data centers, AI backend clusters, and general-purpose computing networks. The Dove 800D (8x100G) and Dove 410D (4x100G) leverage Credo's fourth-generation DSP technology, offering optimized, high-performance, and compact solutions to meet the stringent power consumption requirements of super data centers. Both Dove 800D and 410D DSPs are tailored for multimode (MMF) applications.
Michael Girvan Lampe, Global Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Credo, commented, "Artificial intelligence and machine learning are driving the expansion of hyperscale data centers, leading to an increasing demand for optical connections. Much of this demand requires 400G and 800G multimode short-reach SR4/SR8 module/active optical cables (AOC) solutions. The Dove 800D and 410D Optical DSPs with integrated VCSEL drivers meet the needs of this rapidly growing market, helping our customers simplify PCB designs and reduce overall module costs."
The Dove 800D is an ideal choice for next-generation low-power, high-performance 2x400G/1x800G OSFP/QSFP-DD800 optical modules. The Dove 410D is optimized for 2x200G or 1x400G QSFP112 optical modules. Both products integrate VCSEL drivers. Each transmit and receive channel features dedicated PLLs, enabling various channel breakout modes. The optical side employs high-performance DSP technology combined with performance-enhancing features for optical damage compensation, enabling both products to deliver excellent performance while maintaining low power consumption.
Key Features and Technical Advantages of Dove 800D and Dove 410D:
- Single-channel 100G PAM4 signals on both host-side (electrical) and line-side (optical).
- Fourth-generation DSP technology on both optical and electrical sides, offering industry-leading high sensitivity and low bit error rate (BER) performance, providing sufficient performance margin for component variations and mass production.
- Line-side Rx supports performance-enhancing features tailored to address optical damage in high-pressure MMF environments.
- Integrated 100G VCSEL drivers with programmable laser current capability optimize module layout and reduce BOM costs.
- High-performance transmitters with multi-tap FIR filters for precise optimization of module electrical connectors and optical interfaces.
- Host-side interface supports extended PCB coverage without the need for custom settings for each channel.
- Independent PLLs for each channel support flexible breakout configurations, including 2x400G, 4x200G, and 8x100G.
- Full set of test and loopback functions make laboratory debugging and production testing easier, reducing time to market for customer products.
- Low power consumption improves rack utilization and reduces cooling requirements.
