Overview
The OLM OTDR Card is the optical time domain reflectometer board of the optical line monitoring system. During testing, pulses generated by the pulse generator drive a laser diode to emit light pulses into the fibre under test through a directional coupler. Scattering inside the fibre, caused by impurities and bubbles, returns as back-scattered light and combines with Fresnel reflections from irregular fibre end surfaces.
That reflected light travels back to the coupler and is captured by photodiodes, where it is converted into electrical waves. Because the returned light is extremely weak, it goes through repeated transmission, collection, averaging and amplification before it is processed by the network management platform. The system is designed for high dynamic range and superior resolution.
The card works at a central wavelength of 1550nm. Event blind spots are ≤2m and the diminished blind spot figure is ≤12m, with minimum sampling spacing of 0.125m. Dynamic range is 42dB on single-mode fibre, measured above 120km, and measuring ranges cover 1km, 5km, 10km, 30km, 60km, 100km and 120km.
